Sakura dial from the wood of sustainably sourced Japanese cherry trees

The Japanese tradition of cherry blossom viewing has become increasingly celebrated all around the world, and enjoyed each spring in Japan by residents and visitors alike.

The natural wood dial of this seasonal model is made from the timber of Japanese cherry trees, which are renowned for their depth and beautiful grain. This wood is sustainably obtained through a “thinning” process which selectively removes the smaller trees, allowing the healthiest specimens more room to grow. The subtly different appearance of each piece of natural wood gives every dial a pleasing character of its own: no two watches are the same, making them all the more special.

The dials have been produced in collaboration with Taniguchi Co. Ltd. located in Kanazawa, which has a long history of traditional wooden crafts. It is committed to sustainable product development for the benefit of society, in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. The company continually innovates in the ways it uses natural wood, offering unique products made from trees grown in Japan, and encouraging us to reflect upon the environmental protection of our forests.

This watch design is based on the theme of Hikobae, a Japanese seasonal word used in haiku to herald the arrival of spring. The green small second hand represents the new life of a young shoot sprouting from its roots.
